The mountains meet the sea in Malibu, and the canyons are rivers of fog in the early morning hours. It changes the scenery every minute, if not every second, as hillocks and trees are obscured or revealed, and the minor distances between ridges are highlighted by the sunstruck mist. This photograph was taken along Piuma Road, facing north, looking towards Cold Creek and the King Gillette Ranch.
I began making photographs when I was 13 years old. I created a darkroom using a slide projector, some old food trays, and chemicals and paper my brother liberated from the neighbor's trash. 10 years later I was published in Time Magazine, and 10 years after that I was in graduate school studying political science. After more than 20 years studying, working, and teaching at UCLA I returned to my first love -- photography. Where the commercial work of my youth was mostly personalities (think 1980s television shows) I have always been drawn to landscapes, which are now my primary artistic focus.
