No good photograph was ever made in comfort. We awoke on a mid-January morning to photograph the full moon setting over the Sierra Nevada range. This being Bishop, it was cold. Freezing cold, and the trail to Farmers Pond was barely illuminated by our headlamps. The moment we arrived -- when I saw the moon, the ice, and the trees -- it was clear that my first photo would require me to lay down in the frosty shoreline. Tripod legs splayed, I inched across the mud, trying to balance the composition while keeping the non-stationary moon in the crook of the tree branch. I've forgotten the discomfort, and the image remains.
I began making photographs when I was 13 years old. I created a darkroom using a slide projector, some old food trays, and chemicals and paper my brother liberated from the neighbor's trash. 10 years later I was published in Time Magazine, and 10 years after that I was in graduate school studying political science. After more than 20 years studying, working, and teaching at UCLA I returned to my first love -- photography. Where the commercial work of my youth was mostly personalities (think 1980s television shows) I have always been drawn to landscapes, which are now my primary artistic focus. The photos I post here are a subset of my work. For the most recent stuff, visit my website www.joedohertyphotography.com.
