Great picture. It's my privilege to feature the picture in the group "LA SoCal Artist." The "Ritz Carlton / JW Marriott are the building the that crane help to construct. Your angle looks as if you were on the west bound 10 fwy.

Joe Doherty replied:

Thanks for adding me! This isn't off the 10. I don't think there is an angle off the 10 to shoot this. The place I was hoping to shoot it was at Pico and Vermont, but I couldn't get access to the roof. Instead I was atop the parking garage at Loyola Law School, which was in line with the vector to get this moonrise through that gap before the Wilshire Tower is completed and blocks the view.

Love your technique and post skills, makes LA look beautiful and since my Mom was raised about a mile from here, I always think it IS beautiful.

Joe Doherty replied:

Thanks Laura for your kind words. I'm a 3rd generation Angeleno, and I think the city gets more beautiful as I get older.

Artist's Description

It's likely that this view of downtown LA won't exist for much longer, as that crane in the middle attests. I've wanted to shoot this angle for years, but finding an adequate high spot has eluded me until now. I would have preferred to be further away, so that the longer lens would result in a larger moon, but this is a nicely proportioned image and the close proximity meant that atmospheric distortion is less of an issue.

About Joe Doherty

Joe Doherty

I began making photographs when I was 13 years old. I created a darkroom using a slide projector, some old food trays, and chemicals and paper my brother liberated from the neighbor's trash. 10 years later I was published in Time Magazine, and 10 years after that I was in graduate school studying political science. After more than 20 years studying, working, and teaching at UCLA I returned to my first love -- photography. Where the commercial work of my youth was mostly personalities (think 1980s television shows) I have always been drawn to landscapes, which are now my primary artistic focus. The photos I post here are a subset of my work. For the most recent stuff, visit my website www.joedohertyphotography.com.
