Description
This was a situation where I went to photograph one thing, and the weather turned it into something else. I drove down the gravel road to Black's Point intending to shoot the Moon rising over Mono Lake. Driving up 395 from Mammoth, a thunderstorm was hammering the eastern slopes of the Sierras, with flashes of brilliant light and great peals of thunder rattling my car. But to the east it was clear enough, so that I might get the shot I came for. After some trepidation driving to the location (hoping my cell phone had coverage in case I got stuck) I walked 100 yards to the beach to set up my shot. But by that time the clouds were moving east, and completely socked in the Moon. There was no way I could get the moonrise, which I had waited 2 months to shoot. But to the west the storm was clearing, which meant it was moving over my position, lightning and thunder and all. Do I stay and shoot, or run for the car? I stayed, counting the seconds between lightning and thunder and monitoring the back of my neck for rising hair. I was glad I stayed to get this shot. The foreground is Black's Point, the background is Lee Vining and Yosemite National Park. The rain was still falling over the lake, but the sun broke through the clouds over the mountains. About 5 minutes later I ran for the car, a little sad that I missed the Moon but happy to have this shot.
